Maad - Maad (1976)

The only ever sign of life from this Italian band.

We are in jazz land here. Very much jazz. But not so much Italian jazz. Take a lot of Latin-American rhythms, quirky Italian jazz, some of Pierre Moerlin's Gong, some ragtime, some commercial jazz and traditional jazz. That is when you get this forty minutes long album.

Vibraphone, piano, drums, bass, saxophone and guitars is the instruments here. Lots and lots of vibraphone, that is. Which is good news in my view. It is by far the best thing about this album too.

The music here is a mishmash of everything. This album also includes a lot of clashes between various jazz genres. The use of several well known ragtime and commercial jazz melodies sounds stupid in my view.
I like this album when they do their own stuff. That is not that often. What I will remember this album for is the crass collisions between stupid ideas like the well known commercial jazz pieces and simple, cheap melody lines taken from other pieces of music.

The end result is a decent album which does not appeal to me at all.
