Mercer - Futures Market (2013)

The debut album from this Chicago, USA based band. And a Name Your Price Bandcamp album too. Link below.

The music on this album is somewhere between art pop, art prog and eclectic prog. The male vocals is pretty theatrical, the inclusion of some sporadic trumpets and the rather untraditional take on traditional instruments gives this album a lot of character and style. The vocals is also great and the sound takes me back to ragtime and one of my favourite movies of all time; The Sting with Robert Redford and Paul Newman. That means the 1930s gangster and bohemian sound.

Futures Market is a stylish album in other words which would not shame any record collection. It is slightly unfortunate that the sound and style is not backed up by some great tracks here. There is none here. The music is very good throughout though and Futures Market is one of the best Name Your Price Bandcamp albums of the year. I would not mind paying for this album.

Mercer is a band I have noted down as a band worth keeping an eye on for the future.

3.5 points
